Oh, and here’s a tip when the lights are on this is still a really good extra tart gin and tonic recipe for the rest of the year.

What’s in a Glowing Gin and Tonic?

A Glowing Gin and Tonic is made with just 3 ingredients Gin and Tonic Water and lemon juice. Oh, and you’ll need a black light to make this glow effect visible.

What is gin? 

Gin is a distilled alcoholic beverage that revolves around juniper “berries” as a main ingredient. Gin has been around for a while, with origins in the Middle Ages as herbal medicine, but through time and a little marketing gin became a desirable alcoholic drink imported and sold all over the world by the spirits industry.

What is Tonic Water? And why does is glow in the dark? 

Tonic water is a carbonated beverage containing a compound called Quinine. Quinine (made from tree bark) creates that signature bitter taste you experience when drinking tonic water. Often soft drink manufacturers add sugar to balance this bitter water, giving the bittersweet taste you either hate or love.

Quinine is also the ingredient that allows Gin to glow under an ultraviolet or UV light due to the method I which it processes light, when stimulated Quinine emits a fluorescent blue light.

Most fresh ingredient mojitos will land around 220 to 240 calories depending on your choice of rum, as the rest of the ingredients are fairly calorie friendly.

Most Gins has an alcoholic content or (ABV) between 35% and 48%. Hendricks Gin has an ABV of 41.4%, while Tanqueray has an ABV of 47.3%.

In this recipe we chose to use Hendrick’s which has a unique taste that comes from its use of roses and cucumbers along with 11 other botanicals.

  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • 2-5oz Tonic Water
  • ½ oz Lemon Juice

QUICK SHOP

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Fill your Highball Glass with Ice. 
  2. Add your Gin and Lemon Juice.  
  3. Top with Tonic Water. 
  4. Garnish with a lemon. 
  5. Serve under a Black Light and Enjoy!
