FAQS:
Jamaica, right? Rum punch had to have been originated somewhere in the Caribbean. Well, not actually. The first records of rum punch come India, way back in the 17th century.
It is believed that sailors for the British East India Company learned and began to make an early version of punch as an alternative to beer. India’s earliest recorded punch recipe dates to 1638. But during this British East India Trade Britain popularized this drink as a party staple made with rum, citrus and various spices sand even served up these drinks in massive punch bowls.
What Kinds of Rum Go into Rum Punch?
While our recipe features just 1 type of rum (white rum) there’s a lot of different kinds of rum and trust us they all make a great rum bucket cocktail.
Below are a few of most frequently used rums in rum punch recipes.
White Rum – White rum or light rum is the most used in mixed cocktails as this version has no color and adds little flavor to your recipe, just a slight sweetness.
Spiced Rum – You guessed it this type of rum is mor full bodied embracing notes of Vanilla, cinnamon, and fruit in its flavor profile. (Sailor Jerrys & Captain Morgan)
Coconut Rum – Typically used in tropical cocktails and rum punches, Coconut rum offers a perfect hint of coconut and is often sweeter than most rums.
Flavored rum – Flavored spirits have become more and more popular here in the states, and rum is no exception. You can find rum in virtually every flavor your heart desires. Most brands use a version of their light rum and find a way to make it even sweeter and mask any bite with over-the-top fruity flavors. (Lemon, pineapple, etc.)
Dark rum – This is the heaviest and most full bodied of the lot. Often used in traditional tiki cocktail recipe or enjoyed as a sipper.
